In the early 2000s, RealNetworks offered several widely used software products including different versions of RealJukebox, which allowed users to record CD-and near-CD-quality versions of their own music onto PCs, and RealPlayer for playing streaming media via the Internet. Also, Google ( GOOGL) currently has this exact same feature in its Google+ Photos app, and Google is expected to give its Photos app a prominent update next week during its I/O developers conference.Įveryone loves a comeback story, and RealTimes is a great product. If you want an additional 25 GB and the ability to create videos that are as long as you want, it's $4.99 per month (compare that to 100 GB for $1.99 a month on Google).įor $9.99 a month, you can get an unlimited storage plan, which is more than what Dropbox and Google offer at the same price (1 terabyte), but that's a lot of photos. Longer videos can be created for $0.99 each. The app is free if all you want is 2 GB of cloud storage, and the ability to create 30-second videos. Videos can't be edited within the app, but Glaser says a video editor will be introduced in the future. It's not particularly great at making slideshows of huge photo albums - smaller photo albums worked much better and are decent enough to be shared. That means iPhone users have to keep the app open to create a full slideshow (that's not true for Android phones). Because of the way iOS works, the iPhone app stops stops uploading photos once your phone goes idle. You can watch the slideshows on nearly any connected device, and one RealTimes account can be logged into up to 15 devices, so the app can be a helpful collaboration tool. The app even chooses background music.Īfter you save a story, all of your photos and videos are backed up to a cloud account. When it's ready, the pictures transition with dissolves, cross-fades, pans and zooms. They can recognize faces, identify duplicate pictures, selecting the one that is in focus and more vibrant, and choose video clips based on bit rate, or quality.ĭepending on how many files you have, a video slideshow can be ready within seconds or minutes. The app's technology then selects and arranges images based on algorithms. RealTimes is instant because it looks at the photos and videos you have on your computer, phone, or tablet, and groups them into a "story" based on date or location. "We're trying to be the fastest and easiest app, not the fanciest," Glaser said.

“Infectious, melodic, and very rhythmic.” “There was a sound that other people wanted,” she says. (All told, close to 175 gold and platinum records were recorded at Sigma.) She recalls spacious rooms that seated entire orchestras, which gave musicians the opportunity to replicate the live experience in the studio. “It was a vibrant facility,” said veteran radio broadcaster and Influence Entertainment CEO Dyana Williams, who remembers being impressed by the large number of gold records hanging on the wall during her first trip to Sigma in the mid-1970s. Along with producer/arranger Thom Bell, they turned to Sigma for the sound they were looking to capture. Two Cameo-Parkway songwriting veterans, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, had just launched their own label, Philadelphia International Records. He rechristened it Sigma and converted it into an innovative state-of-the-art studio. In 1968, Joe Tarsia, an audio engineer who cut his teeth with Cameo-Parkway, purchased the Reco-Art studio. “She Loves You,” the first number-one Beatles record in the United States, was mastered there in 1963 before being released on the local Swan label. Beginning in the late 1950s, it was home to the Reco-Art studio, where a number of hits for Philly-based labels such as Cameo-Parkway were recorded. “The most exciting part of story is the late ’60s and 1970s, which is not that long ago, so that sometimes will raise an eyebrow-‘is this really historic?’ I think it’s our job as preservationists to say undeniably yes, that recent history is history and helps us to tell a story about Philadelphia.”ĭesigned by architect Charles Oelschlager and constructed around 1935, the building became the cornerstone of a bustling media district in the mid-20th century. “There’s a perception that the kinds of buildings that most deserve to be preserved are much older,” Preservation Alliance director of advocacy Patrick Grossi told me. The Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia submitted the proposal. A music collector with an encyclopedic knowledge of Philly soul, he assembled a number of people together in support of the cause, including former Sigma employees, music industry veterans, and academics. The move to preserve Sigma was spearheaded in large part by Max Ochester, owner of Brewerytown Beats Records and founder of the nonprofit Philly Sound Archive. “It gets me in my Philly heart is all I can say.” With the committee’s recommendation, Sigma’s case will now be heard by the full historical commission, which will make the final decision. “I didn’t need convincing about Sigma because of what I already knew,” committee chair Emily Cooperman said during the hearing. The nomination for historic designation quickly passed by unanimous consent. It’s one of the few remaining buildings in the city connected to what’s been called the Golden Era of Philly music, roughly a three-decade stretch from the 1950s through the 1970s. David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, the Jacksons, and many other stars sought out Sigma’s sound, making pilgrimages there to record albums. The studio was home base for Philadelphia International Records, whose roster included the Delfonics, the Stylistics, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and the renowned MFSB players. Drexel University inhertied the library of 6,200 master tapes in 2005.Formerly headquartered at 210-212 North 12th Street, just a few blocks from City Hall, Sigma helped give rise to the sound that came to embody 1970s R&B and disco. Back in October, a rare reel of David Bowie’s Young Americans sessions recorded at Sigma in August 1974 was found by Drexel professor Toby Seay. The legendary recording studio was founded by Joseph Tarsia in 1968 and went on to produce hits from Billy Joel, Patti Labelle, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Village People, The Roots and many more hit-makers in its state-of-the-art environment. and 212 North 12th Street Investments L.L.C purchased the historic building for $1.55 million and plan to convert it into a yet-to-be-determined number of apartments. Now comes word that the former site of Sigma Sound Studios at 210-14 North 12th Street, the other building where “The Sounds of Philadelphia” was quite literally engineered, has been sold for redevelopment.Īccording to Natalie Kostelni of the Philadelphia Business Journal, entities under the names 210 North 12th Street Investments L.L.C. We know all about Carl Dranoff’s plan to convert the former site of Philadelphia International Records into the sky-piercing SLS International Hotel & Residences. Sigma Sound Studios | Image: Google Street View That Karen's Backup program looks interesting. I'm curious about what utilities you are all using. I've been trying to get my collection under control lately, and ready to digitize all of my CDs before selling them. I hate letting go of any of them, it's almost like a miniature version of hoarding.Īs for how to maintain a digital collection I'm not really sure yet, I have everything burnt to DVD-R but I know that's probably not very reliable, I have a NAS with 2 mirrored drives in which is pretty good, I had one drive fail but put a new one fine without any problems, I should probably have something offsite though, one of my friends got burgled recently and one of the things they took was his external hard drive so he lost everything that wasn't on his PC (which he got back, the cops caught them burgling another house the same night - for some reason he never got the drive back). What did it for me was the increasing number of CDs I've got that are starting to fail - some are visibly brown round the edges but others don't have a mark on them and still skip or fail to rip to WAV/MP3. Yeah this hit me too a few months ago, until then I have rarely sold off any CDs I've bought since I got my first CD player in 1991 unless I really hated them. I've finally hit the fuck it stage and am digitizing and/or otherwise divesting off all my physical media. You should also consider replacing your internal drives and rolling the older units to be used in the external Docking Stations - that way, the best drives are in the most important location - and if you buy a dual docking station and access to another computer, it's very simple to make a "clone" of your current drives onto the new drives (this may take an extended amount of time to transfer, so be sure to consider the cooling needs of these drives as the spin for a couple hours). Also, keep in mind, the Docking Stations receive INTERNAL Hard Drives, which are generally less costly than their external brethren. As for speed, the determining factor for speed in this scenario will the connection method - the slowest method would be USB 2.0, faster would be eSATA (6x USB 2.0), but the fastest would be USB 3.0 (which is ~10x faster than USB 2.0). I swear by Western Digital Caviar Black Drives - they are pricey - Newegg current selling 2GB drive for $170, 4GB for $300. it'd be nice if it was fast, as sin 7200 RPM. There’s also a shipwreck that can spawn, which may add to the realism! Desert Emerald Temple Seed: -139003 Once you’re confident enough, the surrounding ocean is filled with ocean monuments that you can explore for far higher tiers of loot - if you can survive. The islands technically contain everything you need to survive if you’re willing to put the work in, which makes the seed excellent for shipwreck or survival stories. This neat seed spawns you directly on three small islands. This is a good seed for more casual exploration for players who want to try something unique that doesn’t take a lot of travel or danger to check out. It also sits beside a broad taiga section - a northern forest filled with spruce trees and occasionally also full of wolves. In order to get root access the Fire HD 6 must be running the Fire OS 4.5.3 or below. To install Google application you need root access to the tablet. Here are the detailed steps that helped me get there. It took me some time to figure it out, and after two attempts, I managed to get everything working perfectly. There are a lot of information on how to root the Fire HD 6 and install Google applications, unfortunately all resources are not up to date or detailed enough. Knowing that the Fire HD 6 is running Android, I started looking for a way to install the Google Apps. Using the Fire HD 6 without the Gmail, Hangout, Drive and other google applications was not an option for me. My unpleasant surprise was discovering that Google applications are not available in the Amazon store. It was no surprise to me to find out that the Fire HD 6 had only access to the Kindle Store. I found its price attractive with respect to its characteristics, and being an old customer of Amazon I was confident that the tablet will meet my expectations. I had high hopes that it would be the perfect tablet to read books, use Skype and check mails. I recently acquired an Amazon Fire HD 6 tablet. This has been an awesome thread, keep up the great suggestions.Kiedyś toczyła się na tym forum dyskusja na temat gier dla systemu Linux. Many of my favorite Steam 2D games I got very cheap in bundles, aka as low-risk purchases, so I'm not sure what to recommend on that front.īy the way, Zombie Shooter and Alien Shoot 2 are very underrated throwback action RPGs worth checking out (usually priced cheap). Howeve,r unless there is a demo, there is no substitute for trying out the games and determining that for yourself. I also think Castle Crashers and Battlebock do too (I probably enjoy Battleblock more than CC). Volgarr is indeed a good example of a game that very much delivers on that front. I've been playing video games since the arcade/2600 days and while some games certainly don't deliver like the oldies, many of the ones I and many others cited do hold up to that standard very well. Those games' flash-esque appearance made me think of the gameplay/responsiveness issue brought up here in the thread with recent games compared to titles from yesteryear. but I have enjoyed what I have played.Īlso wanted to plug for Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theatre. These are all games that may not have been mentioned earlier and/or I have not had an opportunity to play too much. Honorable mentions include Diehard Dungeon, Capsized, Pid, Rochard, Vessel, Apatheon, Dustforce DX and Gunman Clive. Fun games.Īs for games that I would qualify as quality "ports" on Steam (either from iOS or consoles): Death Rally, Halo: Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate Deluxe Edition, Dyad, Dynamite Jack, Nidhogg and the recently updated Gauntlet Droid Assault is like a spiritual successor to Berserk, Titans Attacks the same to Space Invaders, Ultratron to Robotron. I mentioned quite a few games in an earlier post but I also wanted to plug offerings by Puppy Games, who created the Tower Defense game Revenge of the Titans, but also developed awesome retro action games like the Droid Assault, Titan Attacks and Ultratron. Legend of Dungeon is another rogue-like I got on the cheap. It has a demo, and I highly encouraged folks interested in the game to try that out. I am really high on Luckslinger, a recent release. For Vlambeer, I meant to say Devolver - who published Luftrausers by Vlambeer, but also great 2D games like Not a Hero and BroForce. In an earlier post, I mentioned strong publisher efforts by Adult Swim Games and Vlambeer. I would categorize that with Super Crate Box as dang fine arcade action games. Good to see Super Platformer Deluxe mentioned. For example in the more recent Castlevanias, like Order of Ecclesia, if Shanoa runs in the opposite direction she is facing, you see her take a step the other way and start turning, So it feels like she was walking one way, then turns around to run the other way when she needs to, instead of having say a sprite just flip when you want to change direction. It can also be done well even if they move in a uniform speed, if the animation is right. Not only that but it feels like it moves at a uniform pace, like there is no actual jogging into running, for example when Mario runs he goes from a walk to a slightly faster jog into a full run with his arms out to the side, showing there is a transition in speed and movement cycle. When he says flash game movement, it sort of reminds me of some flash games back in the day where it feels like they just glide across the ground, the walk cycle may not exactly fit the movement. I share a similar sentiment with them in that some games don't feel like they have weight within their movement. Avoid building too close to your capital city, as in the latter stages of the game, close proximity causes them to compete for resources. These cities are versatile and a good choice for any Civ player. If you want a Balanced city: Settle in a place with plenty of easy access to food, trade, and production and if possible next to resources and rivers.By now you should have around 100 gold, which gives you a free settler so decide what type of city you want and place it in the appropriate place. Unless you see any iron lying around, you may want to skip this and research Alphabet instead. Ironworking gives you legions and the ability to work with the iron resource. A barracks plus a Great Leader grants them immediate Elite status, allowing you to build highly specialized armies. Bronze Working also grants you barracks (upgrades units to veterans with +50% attack and defense). Bronze working grants you archers and the great wonder Colossus of Rhodes which grants you double trade within the city turning your city into a scientific powerhouse, combined with a library you will far out tech other civilizations in the early and mid game. Choose Bronze working>Iron working, if you want to focus on a balanced military.Additionally, Alphabet grants you the ability to build libraries (build this ASAP as it gives you x2 science in that city), Writing gives you a free spy, and the ability to build them, and reaching Literacy first gives you +1 science in each city. This will put you towards the front of the tech race and directly leads to mathematics (being able to make catapults-handy!). Choose Alphabet>Writing>Literacy if you want to focus on science development. However ,make sure you can reach masonry and irrigation first as the give you a free wall (+100% city defense) and +1 pop in each city. Choose Granary>Masonry>Irrigation if you want to focus on city development.Choose Horseriding>Feudalism, if you want to rush the enemy in the early game.(ex: being the first to research gunpowder would grant you a rifleman unit in your capital city.) After a few turns a message will pop up asking you what to research next. Many techs grant you a bonus for being the first to research them, this bonus may include gold, culture or science bonuses for your cities, even Great People! Being the first to discover a military oriented technology will always grant you one free unit of that technology. This forces enemies to attack across a river and also up a hill! (-50% attack for them, +50% defense for you!) An optimal city location would be a hill surrounded on multiple sides by rivers. However settling next to a hill gives the enemies a +50% attack bonus when attacking from that hill. However settling on a hill is very good, as it gives your city a much improved line of sight and adds a whooping +50% attack and defensive bonus to units stationed inside. Avoid: Likewise you should settling adjacent to mountains, and hills, unless the hill contains iron (with early technology iron-working this gives you a hefty production boost), or if the mountains contain gold, or gems(both of which give you, well, gold). It is also a good strategy to settle directly next to a barbarian village, as they give you a free militia and there is a valuable resource tile underneath them. Any opposing civilization that attacks from across a river has its attack power slashed by 50%. Look for: Be on the lookout for rivers and resource tiles, these can provide a ton of extra food ,production, and trade.Look for enemy capitals, native villages, and resources. A good place to play should be a city surrounded by 2 grasslands, 3 forest, and 2 sea tiles. This should be a location with 4+ food, 4+ production (hammers), and 4+ trade. Move your settler to an optimal capital city starting position. Some cards are banned because they have proven to simply be too powerful in their respective format. What does that mean? If the card were legal, a competitive player either must be playing it, or must be specifically targeting it with his or her own strategies. Doing so makes your deck illegal to play in any sanctioned tournaments for that format.Ĭards are usually banned from play if they enable a deck or play style that heavily skews the play environment. If a card appears on the banned list for your chosen format, then you may not include that card in your deck or sideboard. Second, the banned and restricted lists are format-specific, so a card that is banned in Modern may still be legal to play in Standard. It's important to note a couple of things: First, these lists apply only to Constructed formats and not Limited formats. These lists are made up of cards that are either not allowed at all, or allowed only in a very limited manner. To help maintain the diversity and health of the Magic tournament environment, a system of banned and restricted lists has been developed. If there are plenty of viable options to play, there will be more players at more tournaments. In addition, different players enjoy playing different types of decks. Why? If there were only a single viable deck to play, tournaments would quickly stagnate as players were forced to either play that deck or a deck built specifically to beat it. It is vitally important to ensure that there are multiple competitive decks for the tournament player to choose from. One key to the continued health of Magic is diversity. |
